I received a message from GoDaddy indicating I have 6026 directories that may pose a risk to the server causing my possible account deactivation.

I am new to setting up a website and do not understand what and where the directories are, nor which ones would need to be deleted. I really have no idea how there could be 6026 directories.I tried to find a blog/forum that would explain this to me and could not find anything that would tell me what to look for to reduce.

Some direction on this would be helpful so I can be diligent in helping GoDaddy.

Thank you

Without sharing private or confidential information can you include some of the information from GoDaddy in this question - such as the location of the directories or the reason why they might pose a risk?

This is the email recieved: Dear Valued GoDaddy Customer. Your account contains more than 6026 directories and may pose a potential performance risk to the server. Please reduce the number of directories for your account to prevent possible account deactivation. In order to prevent your account from being locked out we recommend that you create special tmp directory.Or use the link below: https://mya.godaddy.com/common.aspx?user=ca91873a9667a6bd98115829f350b5a4 Sincerely, GoDaddy technical support. I clicked on the link and got this: Tmp directory created. Press Save and Close Does that mean it is fixed? I just don't understand how there are 6026 directories. I don't know how they get created to avoid it in the future.

tmp ( temporary ) directories are usually created by scripts that upload or create files - such as images - does your website allow users to upload files - what system does it use?
  • jenscookin
Since I am a bit of a newbee to this, I am not sure I understand your question. The only uploading of images to my website is done by me. As for system - where do I get that information? Do you mean who is the domain/server through? That would be GoDaddy. Sorry to be a bit inept. I'm just getting into doing this and I'm trying to get the lingo down.

It's hard to answer a question until it is phrased properly - we understand you're just starting out, but without something more to go on, it's going to be hard to offer any workable solutions - try asking your hosting company again, and point out that you are keen to sort this, but need them to hold your hand a little more.

Just received the same email and DO NOT sign in to your account via the link provided. It’s a scam to collect your user name and password. Just got off the phone with GoDaddy.

    Thanks for sharing that advice.

Somethings to consider for your site:

a) seek a local experienced developer to do an analysis of your site to research the too many directories question – in the long run this may save lots of time and heartache

b) btw, upload resized images and not originals, probably from your digital camera, to improve page load times. GIMP (a poor man’s Photoshop) is free, works on most platforms and has many tools to work with images/resize/crop/etc.
